Our Kennel: Colt

Meet Colt. I bought him when he was 12 weeks old. Obviously, having seen that we have show dogs, Colt was my first hunting dog. I had never trained a hunting dog and had no idea where to start. With no formal training, I started Colt in the field at only 5 months old, in the cold Lake Almanor, October 2009. See the bottom picture, second to last. Those were his first 12 birds retrieved. On the way home from that hunting trip, being an avid duck hunter, we couldnt pass up the opportunity to stop at a Refuge and walk around. That is where Colt retrieved the Mallard Drake in the 3 photos to the right of the photo from Lake Almanor. With a great start, I furthered his training. Colt, now almost 2, with his second Duck Hunting Season just passed, is now at the point of being able to mark the fallen duck on his own, watch the sky for ducks that fly by, and find the birds using only scent. He is now taking commands in the field while on a blind retrieve, with me using only arm signals for out, left, and right. Next season, he will be working on whistle commands.

Colt is a perfect addition to the family. He is always so eager to learn and jumps at any opportunity to get some love. He loves his car or truck rides and camping is his favorite past time during the summer, waiting for Duck Season.

Good boy!
